Adult Learners' Week will take place May 18th-24th at a workplace near you.

Adult Learners’ Week is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to celebrate the benefits of lifelong learning. Whether you’re an individual looking at anything from improving your current job prospects to learning just for fun, or an organisation looking to help support adults with lifelong learning, Adult Learners’ Week is for you. This year’s Adult Learners’ Week is bigger than ever.  

On Saturday May 18^th at 13:00-14:00 get a chance to explore the Norwich Castle Museum Keep. This tour will take you around the oldest part of the Norman Castle. Norwich’s magnificent and historic Castle is one of Britain’s best.  Hear an informal introduction to its rich and varied history, and learn what life was like 900 years ago. Places limited please book.

On Thursday May 23^rd from 12:00-12:45 take a guided lunch time tour of the Norfolk Archive Centre to learn more about its resources and its 50 year history. Places limited please book.

On Friday May 24th come along to Wellbeing Fair taking place from 10:00-15:00 in the to learn about wellbeing and learning resources available in the local area. At the fair hear a free talk on how to begin researching your family history or try your hand at creative writing. Visit the Norfolk Library Service and Adult Education stalls to learn how reading and learning can help your wellbeing. Don't forget to also visit the UNISON stall to fill in our learning needs survey and receive a free book.

Also on Friday May 24^th from 12:00-13:00 take a guided lunch time tour of the Sainsburys Centre for Visual Arts at the UEA. Places limited please book.

At lunch time on Saturday May 25^th (time to be confirmed) take a guided tour of the Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth. Discover Great Yarmouth's fascinating history, its rich maritime and fishing heritage and some of the colourful characters who made their living from the sea. Places limited please book.

On Monday May 20^th   from 10:30-14:30 join the Norfolk County Council apprentices for an afternoon of events in the Marble Map Area. Full schedule coming soon.

Also on Monday May 20th from 13:00-14:00 in the Colman Room. Try your hand at a bit of art with introduction to Lino Cut and Printmaking. Guided by local artist Laura White get started in printmaking with this quick and inspiring session. Create card designs, invitations or just art for art's sake! Come and give it a try! On Tuesday May 21^st come along to UNISON’s Lifelong Learning Fair taking place from 11:30-14:30 in the marble map area in at County Hall to learn about learning available in the local area. Organisations in attendance will include: the Norfolk Museum Service, Indigo Dyslexia Centre, Adult Education, the Norfolk Library Service, Open University, City College Norwich, Joy of Food, the Sainsbury Centre and UNISON Lifelong Learning. Visit the UNISON stall to fill in our learning needs survey and receive a free book.

Also on Tuesday May 21^st visit the Green Room at the Archive Centre to hear a free talk on how to begin researching your family history from 13:00-14:00.

On Wednesday May 22^nd from 12:45-13:45 at County Hall in Mez 2 come along to a free talk from Picture Norfolk to learn about William Henry Finch and his sons. A colourful Victorian family of photographers from humble origins (brought up in the Norwich Yards) who went on to became travelling photographers based in Acle and covering Broads villages. World Book Day Giveaway results

Unison Lifelong Learning's World Book Day Giveaway hosted on the March 7th was a huge success. We would like to thank Healty Planet  for their generous donation of a books to Unison Lifelong Learning and also thank everyone that took part in our World Book Day Giveaways at County Hall, Norwich and City College Norwich. We managed to give away over 500 used books that were saved from landfill. We hope book giveaways like this will help highlight the need to be environmentally friendly, as well as increase our members' literary through reading. Remember to send your book reviews to melissabrown.unison@btconnect.com to be hosted on the blog with a chance to win £10 of book vouchers.

Another book giveaway is planned for Adult Learners' Week May 21st at County Hall, Norwich in the Map Area from 11:30-14:30 to tie into our Lifelong Learning Fair event.

Celebrate LGBT History Month 2013

Check out the LGBT History Month website to learn more about the achievements and histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain and Northern Ireland.

UNISON LGBT members organise locally and nationally to support each other, to identify and challenge discrimination, to increase awareness of LGBT rights and to campaign for change.Visit the UNISON LGBT website to find out how you can get involved and learn about what support UNISON provides our LGBT members so they can be out and proud in their workplaces.





Creative Writing Club

Do you like to write short stories, novels or poetry?

Every two weeks during lunch Unison Lifelong Learning will be holding a creative writing club. All levels of writers are welcome from beginners to published authors. Share your work, get ideas and write some flash fiction during the meetings. The club’s next  meetings will be held from 12-1pm on Thursday February 14^th in Room 117 on the 1^st floor and Thursday February 28^th in Mez 2 at County Hall, Norwich.  Please bring along a short piece of writing to share with the group.
